Deep brain stimulation is a highly experimental neurosurgical treatment for chronic depression in which the brain is stimulated with electrical impulses. Although it's been approved for several other conditions, deep brain stimulation hasn't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for depression treatment and is in the early stages of research. Results
If deep brain stimulation works as hoped, your depression symptoms will improve or go away completely. It may take several months of treatment with deep brain stimulation before you notice any improvements in your depression symptoms, though. And not everyone with chronic depression, especially those who have had depression for years, gets better with deep brain stimulation. Additional research is needed to learn more about how deep brain stimulation works and how safe and effective it is for depression.

Why it's done
Stimulating the brain using a variety of methods is the newest frontier in depression treatment, but it is controversial. One form of stimulation, deep brain stimulation, is a standard treatment for people with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia. Some people with those conditions who underwent deep brain stimulation reported an improved mood. Because of those results, some researchers say the procedure might also help depression when standard treatments, such as antidepressants, psychotherapy or electroconvulsive therapy, don't work.
