What is epstein-barr virus?
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) discovered in 1964, is believed to be the causative agent in infectious mononucleosis. In South African children, it is associated with Burkitt's lymphoma, and in Asian populations with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Why the virus has these different and varied associations in different geographical areas is unknown. Also it is the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, a condition that has become widespread in the United States. EBV is a member of the herpes family and is related to the viruses that cause genital herpes and shingles.

Mononucleosis
Mononucleosis, also known as the "kissing disease," or simply "mono," is a group of symptoms that occur in some individuals who become infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is so widespread that 90% to 95% of all adults everywhere have signs of it in their blood. Infants become susceptible to EBV when they are no longer protected by their mother's immune system, usually after the first year of life. Fortunately, young children don't show symptoms when they are infected. Additionally, getting EBV infection at an early age confers lifetime immunity against future infections. Read more on

Epstein-Barr Virus Infection
The virus was first discovered in 1964 when Sir Michael Anthony Epstein and Yvonne Mr. Barr found it in a Burkitt lymphoma cell line. In 1968, the virus was linked to the disease infectious mononucleosis. Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is very common and usually occurs in childhood or early adulthood. In fact, up to 95% of people in the U.S. have been infected with EBV. EBV is the cause of infectious mononucleosis (also termed "mono"), an illness associated with fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and sometimes an enlarged spleen. Less commonly, EBV can cause more serious disease. Symptoms caused by EBV are usually mild and self-limited, but the virus persists in the body for life. It can reactivate quietly without causing symptoms and may contaminate saliva. Thus, otherwise healthy people can spread the virus to uninfected people through kissing or sharing food. Hence, mononucleosis is sometimes known as the "kissing disease." EBV probably plays a role in the development of some cancers including certain lymphomas and nasopharyngeal cancer.
