What is follicle stimulating hormone?


FSH stands for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone is released by the anterior pituitary gland. In women, FSH stimulates production of eggs and a hormone called estradiol during the first half of the menstrual cycle. In men, FSH stimulates production of sperm. This article discusses the test to check the level of FSH in the blood.

Luveris
Luveris (lutropin alfa for injection) is a sterile lyophilized powder composed of recombinant human luteinizing hormone, r-hLH. r-hLH is a heterodimeric glycoprotein consisting of two non-covalently linked subunits (designated α and β) of 92 and 121 amino acids, respectively. The carbohydrate chain attachment to the r-hLH protein core occurs via N- but not O-linkage. The N glycosylation sites are Asn-52 and Asn-78 for the α&ndash,subunit and Asn-30 for the β&ndash,subunit. The β - chain has an N-glycosylation site and its structure and glycosylation pattern are very similar to that of pituitary-derived hLH. Luveris (lutropin alfa for injection), concomitantly administered with Gonal-f (follitropin alfa for injection), is indicated for stimulation of follicular development in infertile hypogonadotropic hypogonadal women with profound LH deficiency (LH < 1.2 IU/L). A definitive effect on pregnancy in this population has not been demonstrated. The safety and effectiveness of concomitant administration of Luveris with any other preparation of recombinant human FSH or urinary human FSH is unknown.

Iodotope
Iodotope preparations for therapeutic use are radiopharmaceuticals containing sodium iodide I 131 in capsules for oral administration. Capsules are available in units of 37 to 4810 megabecquerels (1 to 130 millicuries) at the time of calibration. Therapeutic doses of Iodotope (Sodium Iodide I 131 Capsules USP) are indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism and selected cases of carcinoma of the thyroid. Palliative effects may be seen in patients with papillary and/or follicular carcinoma of the thyroid. Stimulation of radioiodide uptake may be achieved by the administration of thyrotropin. (Radioiodide will not be taken up by giant cell and spindle cell carcinoma of the thyroid or by amyloid solid carcinomas.)...

SODIUM IODIDE I-131
Sodium Iodide I-131 (Na 131I) for therapeutic use is available as a stabilized aqueous solution for oral administration. The solution is available in screw-cap vials with radioactivity ranging from 185 to 5550 megabecquerels (5.0 to 150 millicuries) per vial at the time of calibration. The solution contains 0.1% sodium bisulfite and 0.2% edetate disodium as stabilizers, 0.5% sodium phosphate anhydrous as a buffer and sodium iodide I-131 at concentrations of 185 or 925 megabecquerels (5.0 or 25.0 millicuries) per milliliter. The pH has been adjusted to between 7.5 and 9.0. The iodine I-131 utilized in the preparation of the solution contains not less than 99% Iodine I-131 at the time of calibration. Sodium Iodide I-131 Therapeutic may be indicated in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and selected cases of carcinoma of the thyroid. Palliative effects maybe seen in patients with papillary and/or follicular carcinoma of the thyroid. Stimulation of radioiodide uptake may be achieved by the administration of thyrotropin.
