gout or pseudogout information from trusted sources:
Gout, also called gouty arthritis, is a disease of how the body processes nutrients (metabolism) in which crystals of uric acid are deposited in the joints, tendons, and skin. Most commonly affecting men, gout emerges as the sudden development of swollen, red, hot, tender joints, especially at the big (great) toe, ankle, wrist, and knee.
A hereditary metabolic disease that is a form of acute arthritis and is marked by inflammation of the joints. Joints affected may be at any location but gout usually begins in the knee or foot.
Although gout attacks rarely last for long periods of time, they can cause complications. As well as affecting you physically, gout can also affect your mood and your work and home life. The severe pain gout causes can make it difficult for you to get around, which can sometimes lead to feelings of depression or anxiety. Your GP will discuss ways of making your day-to-day life easier during a gout attack, and will help you deal with any feelings of depression that you may be experiencing.
Gout is a type of arthritis that involves sudden, severe attacks of joint pain. It is caused by deposits of needle-like crystals in joints and surrounding tissues. In the past, gout was thought of as a disease of the wealthy because it seemed to result from eating rich food and drinking alcohol. In fact, anyone can develop gout, diet is not necessarily a major factor.
