Tonsillitis
On the day of the operation, your child's surgeon will explain exactly what will happen during surgery. This is the time for you to discuss any fears you might have and let them know if your child is on any medication or has any allergies.
Tonsillectomies and children
Today, many parents wonder if it is wise for children to have the tonsils taken out. Tonsillectomy may be recommended if your child has any of the following: Difficulty swallowing Obstructed breathing during sleep Throat infections or throat abscesses that keep returning In most cases, inflammation of the tonsils can be successfully treated with antibiotics. There are always risks associated with surgery. However, if your child has restless sleep, poor growth, mouth-breathing with recurring swollen tonsils, or loud snoring, consult your doctor about a tonsillectomy.
Adenoids and adenoidectomy
An adenoidectomy is usually performed by an ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon. The operation is a quick procedure, and carries very few risks or complications.
Tonsillectomy
Tonsillectomy is surgery to remove the tonsils. These two fleshy oval-shaped pads are located on either side of the back of the throat. Tonsillectomy is needed when the tonsils become infected frequently (tonsillitis) or an infection doesn't get better with other treatment. In some cases, tonsillectomy is done because enlarged tonsils block normal breathing. This can lead to problems such as sleep apnea. Less often, tonsillectomy is done to treat cancer or a tonsil that won't stop bleeding. Tonsillectomy is one of the more common surgeries in children, but it's done less often in adults.
Tonsilitis
Tonsillitis is a sudden inflammation of the tonsils that most commonly occurs in early childhood. Tonsillitis occurs when either viruses or bacteria infect the tonsils, two groups of fleshy tissue at the back of the throat. A doctor must identify whether the cause is bacterial or viral in order to determine the best treatment approach. A child who has frequent or persistent episodes of tonsillitis may have chronic tonsillitis. In such cases, the doctor may recommend that the tonsils be removed surgically. However, tonsillectomies are performed less often today than in the past because research has shown that this procedure may not always help lower the risk of tonsillitis.
Peritonsillar Abscess
If bacteria is causing the infection, you will be given antibiotics. Painkillers may be prescribed, if needed. The abscess will need to be drained. This requires surgery. Surgery to remove the tonsils (tonsillectomy) may be done.
