What is Violence?
Child abuse is doing something or failing to do something that results in harm to a child or puts a child at risk of harm. Child abuse can be physical, sexual or emotional. Neglect, or not providing for a child's needs, is also a form of abuse. Most abused children suffer greater emotional than physical damage. An abused child may become depressed. He or she may withdraw, think of suicide or become violent. An older child may use drugs or alcohol, try to run away or abuse others.

Child abuse takes many forms: Physical abuse. Physical child abuse occurs when a child is purposefully injured. Physical abuse can be an act of direct physical harm or an act of omission that leads to injury.Sexual abuse. Sexual child abuse is any sexual activity with a child, including fondling, oral-genital contact, intercourse and exposure to child pornography.Emotional abuse. Emotional child abuse includes verbal and emotional assault such as continually belittling or berating a child as well as isolating, ignoring or rejecting a child.Neglect. Shaken Baby Syndrome
Shaken baby syndrome (SIN-drohm), or SBS, occurs when a baby develops brain injury as a result of physical abuse. This happens when a baby is grasped and shaken violently. A baby still has weak neck muscles and a large, heavy head. This makes it hard for him to control his head when he is shaken forcefully. Babies also have more fluid surrounding their brain. Intense shaking throws their brain back and forth inside the skull, and may cause it to bruise, swell, and bleed. This may lead to permanent, severe brain damage and even death. Read more on

The abuser is referred to as the perpetrator of abuse. Domestic Violence

Although it may describe various violent relationships, such as child abuse, elder abuse, it is most commonly applied to an intimate relationship between two adults in which one partner uses a pattern of assault and intimidating acts to assert power and control over the other partner. Only recently recognized as a major public health issue, domestic violence has a long, dark past and is firmly entrenched in many societies.
